At minimum, every Medicare Advantage plan must cover everything that Original Medicare covers. But most go further. The most common added benefit is prescription drug coverage — Part D — which is included in nearly every Medicare Advantage plan. Many plans also include dental, vision, hearing, and other benefits that Original Medicare does not provide.
It's important to understand what you're agreeing to when you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan. Instead of the federal government paying your doctors and hospitals directly, your coverage comes from the private plan. The plan takes on all of your medical costs and manages your benefits. You are still on Medicare — but your day-to-day coverage runs through the private insurer, not the government.
Medicare Advantage works differently. Instead of that open-access model, most Advantage plans use a network of providers — typically an HMO or PPO structure. You'll pay copayments when you receive services, and the amounts vary by plan. You might pay a small copay for a primary care visit and a higher one to see a specialist. Some plans charge a daily hospital copay; others charge a flat amount for a hospital stay.
One of the most significant differences is that Medicare Advantage plans change every year. Premiums, copayments, provider networks, drug formularies, and additional benefits can all shift on January 1. Every September, plans send members updated materials outlining what's changing for the upcoming year. Reviewing those materials carefully is one of the most important things an Advantage plan member can do each fall.
One cost that does not go away with Medicare Advantage: your Part B premium. Even when enrolled in a Part C plan, you are still required to pay your monthly Part B premium to Medicare.
Medicare Advantage was created to solve this problem. Part C plans offer an alternative path to comprehensive coverage — one with lower or no monthly premiums and no health questions required during valid enrollment periods. Anyone eligible for Medicare can join an Advantage plan without being turned away for pre-existing conditions.
Medicare also built an important safety net into Advantage plans: a maximum out-of-pocket cap. Once your healthcare spending reaches a certain limit in a given year, the plan covers the rest. This protects people from catastrophic medical bills in a way that Original Medicare alone does not.
Prescription drug coverage (Part D) — included in most plans
Routine dental care
Routine vision care and eyewear
Hearing aids and exams
Fitness and wellness programs
Transportation to medical appointments
Over-the-counter health product allowances
The specific benefits available to you depend on which plan you choose and where you live. Plans vary significantly by county, so the options in your area may look very different from what's available elsewhere. This is one reason it's worth working with someone who knows the plans in your specific market.
To join a Medicare Advantage plan, you must meet a few basic requirements. You must be enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B, you must live within the plan's service area, and you must enroll during a valid election period.
Your first opportunity to join a Medicare Advantage plan is during your Initial Coverage Election Period — the same seven-month window around your 65th birthday when you first become eligible for Medicare. This is often the best time to enroll, because you have the most options available and no waiting periods apply.
After your initial enrollment window, you can make changes during the Annual Enrollment Period, which runs from October 15 through December 7 each year. Changes made during this period take effect January 1. There is also a Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from January 1 through March 31, during which current Advantage plan members can switch plans or return to Original Medicare.
Certain life events — such as moving out of a plan's service area, losing other coverage, or qualifying for Extra Help — may also trigger a Special Enrollment Period that allows you to make changes outside the standard windows.
Medicare Advantage and Medigap work very differently, and you cannot have both at the same time. Before you enroll in an Advantage plan, it's worth understanding the full comparison between the two options so you can make a confident decision. The right choice depends on your health, your preferred doctors, how much you travel, and how you prefer to manage your healthcare costs.
Medicare Advantage is a strong option for many people — but it's not the right fit for everyone. The best plan depends on your specific situation: your health needs, your prescriptions, your budget, and the providers you want to keep seeing.
